With the new PowerVR Rogue GPUs making appearances in several mobile chips, we’ve designed an infographic which outlines the future of graphics processing on smartphones, tablets, wearables and more. The graphic helps consumers understand how the newer GPUs stack up against their predecessors and what are the unique advantages of PowerVR over competing solutions.

We’ve focused on PowerVR Series7, our best family of GPUs to date – highlighting key areas where we’ve made significant improvements: reduced memory bandwidth, virtualization support, new APIs for graphics and compute, and superior scalability.

  1. How can GPU performance increase security and IAP? I really didn’t get it.
    Would someone please consider explaining that to me or give me a link to a site explaining that.

    • Hi,
      Virtualization enables devices to run multiple operating systems in parallel and isolated from each other. This creates the basis of secure virtualization, a technique that enables much better security at the hardware level (instead of software-only approaches).
      Say for example you have a wearable (i.e. a smartwatch) that monitors your health, manages your bank payments but also runs a Linux-based operating system. If something happens to your Linux-based OS, you wouldn’t want that to affect the integrity of your mobile payments. By keeping vital apps like the ones mentioned above in secured containers, you can rest assured that your private info will never be accessible to intruders.
      The only way to achieve this secure virtualization is by implementing it at the system level. This means a CPU + GPU approach – we now support full hardware virtualization in MIPS Warrior CPUs and PowerVR Series7 GPUs.

  3. Over a year has gone by since your Ray Tracing ip GR6500 was announced with little info since. What are you plans for this technology revolution and at which process node can we expect to see it in silicon?

    • When you introduce new hardware, there is significant work that needs to be done in terms of software (drivers, compilers, SDK, developers etc.).
      We are making good progress in bringing up the hardware and software that would ensure the best possible ecosystem around our PowerVR Ray Tracing hardware. I am working on an article that offers some insight into the software, for example.
      Our IP has always been foundry-agnostic so it is designed to work at any node.

Back in the high-performance game

Not long after I joined the company, working on the rebrand to Imagination Technologies and promoting both our own VideoLogic-branded boards and those of our partners using ST’s Kyro processors.
